Hakeem Jeffries was born on August 4, 1970, at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in Downtown Brooklyn, to Marland Jeffries, a state substance-abuse counselor, and Laneda Jeffries, a social worker.
He grew up in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn and graduated from Midwood High School, a public school, in 1988.
He studied political science at Binghamton University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in 1992, then completed a Master of Public Policy at Georgetown University in 1994 and a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, at New York University School of Law in 1997.
After law school, Hakeem Jeffries clerked for Judge Harold Baer Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, practiced at the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison from 1998 to 2004, and then became a corporate litigator for Viacom and CBS.
He represented the 57th district in the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2012, where he sponsored a 2010 law, signed by Governor David Paterson, that barred police from compiling the names and addresses of people stopped during street searches without arrest.
Jeffries entered the U.S. House in 2013 and served on the Budget, Judiciary, and Education and Workforce committees. With Representative Doug Collins he produced the First Step Act, which President Trump signed into law in December 2018.
He chaired the House Democratic Caucus from 2019 to 2023 and in January 2020 was one of seven House managers presenting the impeachment case against Trump in the Senate.
In November 2022 the caucus unanimously elected him to succeed Nancy Pelosi as leader, making him the first African American to lead a party in either chamber of Congress, and he has served as House minority leader since 2023.
New York's 8th congressional district covers Southern and Eastern Brooklyn, including Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, East New York, Canarsie, Sheepshead Bay, and Coney Island, and Hakeem Jeffries won re-election there in 2024 with 75.4% of the vote.
New York City Councilor Chi Ossé, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, launched a primary challenge, but the group's New York City branch voted against endorsing him on November 22, 2025, and he ended his campaign two weeks later.
With hospitality manager Vance Bostic disqualified, Jeffries is the Democratic nominee. In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Lewis Mizrahi, a data analyst who appears on both the Republican and Conservative Party lines.
