Jon Allen Husted, born in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, Michigan, on August 25, 1967, was adopted as an infant by James and Judith Husted, who raised him as the eldest of three children in Montpelier, Ohio.
He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1985 and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Dayton.
After a stint on a local campaign, he joined the staff of Montgomery County Commissioner Don Lucas and then served as vice president of business and economic development at the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.
Husted won a five-way race for the Ohio House of Representatives in 2000 and served there from 2001 to 2009, as the chamber's 99th speaker from 2005 to 2009. He then held an Ohio Senate seat from 2009 to 2011.
Ohio voters elected him secretary of state in 2010 over Democrat Maryellen O'Shaughnessy and reelected him in 2014 over Democrat Nina Turner, and he held that office from 2011 to 2019; as the state's chief elections official he set uniform early voting hours across Ohio, and the Supreme Court of the United States sided with Ohio's voter roll maintenance procedures in Husted v.
