Background

Sherrod Campbell Brown was born on November 9, 1952, in Mansfield, Ohio, to Emily (née Campbell) and Charles Gailey Brown, a physician, and is one of three brothers. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1967 and finished Mansfield Senior High School in 1970.

At Yale University, where he resided in Davenport College, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Russian studies in 1974.

He later completed two graduate degrees at Ohio State University, an education master's degree in 1979 and a Master of Public Administration in 1981, and taught at the university's Mansfield campus from 1979 to 1981.

Career

Recruited by a local Democratic official while still a college senior, Brown won election to the Ohio House of Representatives and served there from 1975 to 1983.

He held the post of Ohio secretary of state for two terms, 1983 to 1991, winning the office in 1982 and again in 1986 before losing to Republican Bob Taft in 1990.

After moving to Lorain in 1992, he captured the open 13th congressional district of Ohio, which he held from 1993 to 2007 after six reelections.

In the 2006 Senate election he unseated Republican Mike DeWine, who had served two terms, 56.2% to 43.8%, and he won further terms in 2012 against Josh Mandel and in 2018 against Jim Renacci.

His Senate committee work included chairing the Senate banking committee and membership on the Finance, Veterans' Affairs, and Ethics committees. Seeking a fourth term in 2024, he lost to Republican Bernie Moreno, 50.1% to 46.5%.

After leaving the Senate he held a spring 2025 visiting fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School and launched the Dignity of Work Institute in March 2025.

2026 race

Brown formally declared his candidacy on August 18, 2025, for the 2026 special election to complete the Senate term JD Vance won in 2022, a seat Vance gave up in 2025 on becoming vice president. He won the Democratic primary in March 2026 against minimal opposition. In the November 3 general election he faces Republican Jon Husted, who was appointed to the seat and won his party's nomination unopposed.
