Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Jonathan S. Kreiss-Tomkins, also known as JKT, was born on February 7, 1989, in Sitka, Alaska; his mother, Connie Kreiss, worked as a family doctor. As a Sitka High School freshman in 2003 he drew national attention for organizing online on behalf of the presidential campaign of Howard Dean, and he graduated from the school as an Eagle Scout. He studied at Yale University for three years, leaving in 2012 to seek a seat in the Alaska House of Representatives.
Career
In the 2012 election for House District 34, Kreiss-Tomkins took 50.12%; a recount cut his lead from 34 votes to 32, and the result was declared on December 3, 2012.
He won reelection in 2014 in the redrawn and renumbered 35th district with 60% of the vote against Republican Steven Samuelson, and he represented the district, which takes in Southeast island communities such as Sitka, Hoonah, Kake, Craig and Petersburg, from 2013 to 2023.
He sponsored House Bill 216, which made 20 Alaska Native languages official state languages and became law in April 2014, and in the 30th Legislature he chaired the House State Affairs Committee.
Outside the legislature he founded Outer Coast College and the Alaska Fellows Program and, in 2020, co-founded Covid Act Now.
2026 race
Kreiss-Tomkins, a Democrat, announced his candidacy for governor on February 4, 2026, for a seat that opens because term limits bar the incumbent governor, Mike Dunleavy, from running again.
In the nonpartisan top-four primary on August 18, 2026, he placed first at 22.5%, with fellow Democrat Tom Begich second at 20.8%; Begich then withdrew and endorsed him. The ranked-choice general election on November 3, 2026, also includes three Republicans, among them Bernadette Wilson.
During the campaign Kreiss-Tomkins pledged a cabinet with equal numbers of Democrats, Republicans and independents and called for pausing data center construction until regulations are written.
