Political landscape in Alaska

Overview

Alaska occupies the far northwest of North America and is one of two US states separated from the contiguous forty-eight, the other being Hawaii. Canada's Yukon and British Columbia lie along its eastern edge, while the Bering Strait separates it from Russia's Chukotka region; Arctic seas wash its northern coast and the Pacific its southern shore. It covers more territory than any other state, yet it ranks third-lowest in population and has the sparsest settlement of all fifty. Juneau is the capital, and Anchorage is the most populous city, with roughly half of all residents living in its metropolitan area. Russia colonized the region in the 18th century and sold it to the United States in 1867; it became a territory in 1912 and entered the Union on January 3, 1959, as the 49th state. Fishing, oil and natural gas drive an economy that also relies on military bases and tourism.

Officeholders

As of October 2026, Mike Dunleavy (Republican) is governor, and the state's two US senators are Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, both Republicans.
