Background
David Bronson was born on June 26, 1958, in Superior, Wisconsin, to Bill and Sandy Bronson, and grew up in the south end of the city, where he attended Superior High School and delivered the Evening Telegram as a boy. He went on to the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he completed a B.S. in agricultural economics.
Career
Bronson was a U.S. Air Force pilot between 1981 and 1990, was a plans officer in the Air Force Reserve Command from 1992 to 1993 and served as a maintenance officer and pilot in the Alaska Air National Guard from 1993 to 2005, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.
From 1990 he also flew commercially, including for Delta Air Lines, from which he took early retirement during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He took part in founding the Alaska Family Council, a nonprofit group advocating traditional Christian values, and in 2011 ran for a Midtown seat on the Anchorage Assembly and lost.
In the nonpartisan 2021 Anchorage mayoral election he placed first among 15 candidates in the April 5 vote and won the May 11 runoff against Forrest Dunbar with 50.66%, becoming the 37th mayor of Anchorage; he is a registered Republican. Suzanne LaFrance defeated him in the May 14, 2024 runoff.
He became airport manager of Anchorage Airport by appointment in 2025.
2026 race
Bronson announced on October 2, 2025, that he would run for governor of Alaska in 2026, an open race because incumbent Mike Dunleavy is term-limited.
In the nonpartisan top-four primary on August 18, 2026, he placed fourth with 8.1% of the vote, which advanced him to the ranked-choice general election on November 3. He and Taylor, a fellow Republican finalist, asked Republican voters to list all three Republican candidates on their ranked ballots.
Bronson has backed data centers as an economic opportunity on the condition that they generate their own power and keep energy costs in check.
