Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Born in Washington, D.C., on January 3, 1954, Lamont is the son of Camille Helene Buzby and the economist Edward Miner Lamont. At age seven he moved with his family to Laurel Hollow, Long Island.

He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1972, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in sociology by Harvard College in 1976, and completed a Master of Business Administration at the Yale School of Management in 1980.

In 1984 he founded Campus Televideo, which supplies cable and satellite service to college campuses; he later became chairman of Lamont Digital Systems.

Career

Lamont won election as a Greenwich selectman in 1987 and held the post until 1989. In 2006 he challenged Senator Joe Lieberman for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate and took the primary with 52%, then lost the general election to Lieberman, who ran as an independent. In the 2010 race for governor he lost the Democratic primary to Dannel Malloy on August 10 with 43%.

With Malloy leaving after two terms, Lamont entered the 2018 governor's race on January 17, 2018, choosing former Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz for lieutenant governor, won the Democratic primary over Joe Ganim, and defeated Republican Bob Stefanowski and independent Oz Griebel on November 6.

He took office as the 89th governor on January 9, 2019. His administration legalized recreational cannabis in 2021, raised the state minimum wage on a path to $15 an hour, and created a paid family and medical leave program. In 2022 he defeated Stefanowski again by a wider margin.

2026 race

Lamont announced in November 2025 that he would seek a third term in the election of November 3, 2026. At the Democratic State Convention in Hartford on May 16, 2026, he won the party endorsement over state representative Josh Elliott, 1,468 votes (74.6%) to 501 (25.4%).

Elliott qualified for the primary ballot with more than 15% of delegates, making Lamont the first incumbent Connecticut governor since Ella Grasso in 1978 to be challenged in a primary, and Lamont won the primary held on August 11, 2026.
