Political landscape in Connecticut

Overview

Connecticut is a New England state in the Northeastern United States, bounded by Massachusetts on the north, Rhode Island on the east, Long Island Sound on the south and New York on the west. Only Rhode Island and Delaware are smaller by area, while Connecticut ranks 29th in population and fourth in population density. Hartford is the capital and Bridgeport the most populous city, and the southwestern corner of the state falls within the New York metropolitan area along the Northeast Corridor between New York City and Boston. Named for the Connecticut River, the area was home to Algonquian peoples before Dutch and English settlement in the 1630s. Its nickname, the Constitution State, recalls the Fundamental Orders of 1639, and in January 1788 it was the fifth state to approve the US Constitution. Once a manufacturer of arms, hardware and clocks, Connecticut now relies on finance, insurance and real estate, and it is home to Yale University, the US Coast Guard Academy and the aerospace firms Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky Aircraft.
