Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Susan Margaret Collins was born on December 7, 1952, in Caribou, Maine, one of six children in a family that has run a lumber business there since 1844; both of her parents served as mayor of Caribou. She graduated magna cum laude from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in government.

Career

From 1975 to 1987 Collins worked for William Cohen during his years in the US House and Senate.

Governor John R. McKernan Jr. named her commissioner of Maine's Department of Professional and Financial Regulation in 1987, and President George H. W. Bush appointed her New England regional director of the Small Business Administration in 1992.

In 1993 she took a post in Massachusetts as deputy state treasurer.

Back in Maine, she won the 1994 Republican nomination for governor, the first woman to be a major party's nominee for that office, and placed third with 23%; she then set up and led the Center for Family Business at Husson College in Bangor as its founding executive director.

When Cohen left the Senate in 1996, Collins won his seat, defeating Democrat Joseph E. Brennan 49% to 44%, and she won reelection in 2002, 2008, 2014 and 2020.

She chaired the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs from 2003 to 2007 and the Special Committee on Aging from 2015 to 2021, and has chaired the Appropriations Committee since 2025.

In impeachment trials, she voted to acquit Bill Clinton on both charges, voted to acquit Donald Trump in his first trial and was one of seven Republicans who voted to convict him in his second.

2026 race

Collins, a Republican, announced in February 2026 that she would seek a sixth term and was the sole qualifying candidate on the Republican primary ballot on June 9, 2026. Graham Platner won the Democratic primary that day and withdrew on July 10, and a party nominating convention on July 25 chose Troy Jackson, who formerly presided over the Maine Senate, as the Democratic nominee. The November 3, 2026, election will use ranked-choice voting.
