Political landscape in Maine

Overview

Maine, part of New England, is the farthest northeast of the contiguous states. New Hampshire, its only neighboring state, is on its western side, the Gulf of Maine lies along its southeast, and Quebec and New Brunswick in Canada sit on its northwest and northeast. The largest New England state by total area, Maine ranks 12th smallest by area nationwide and 42nd in population, and it is the most rural state. Augusta is the capital and Portland the most populous city. Indigenous peoples have lived in the region for about 12,000 years, and at the time of European arrival Algonquian-speaking nations now known as the Wabanaki Confederacy governed it. French settlers arrived in 1604, and the English followed in 1607. Maine belonged to Massachusetts until it separated in 1820, and on March 15 of that year it became the 23rd state, admitted under the Missouri Compromise. The state is known for its rocky coastline, mountains, forested interior, wild blueberries, and lobster and other seafood, and the Portland area has developed into a center of the creative economy.
