Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Alan McCrory Wilson, whose birth name was Alan McCrory, was born at Fort Wolters, Texas, on July 16, 1973.

His father, Army captain Michael Alan McCrory, lost his life at Fort Bragg in a training exercise when his son was two; his mother, Roxanne Dusenbury McCrory, then married Joe Wilson, the U.S. representative for South Carolina's 2nd congressional district, who adopted the boy at age three.

Wilson completed a political science degree at Francis Marion University in 1996, the year he entered the South Carolina National Guard, and in 2002 he earned a law degree at the University of South Carolina School of Law.

He holds the rank of colonel in the Guard's Judge Advocate General Corps and was awarded the Combat Action Badge for his Iraq service.

After law school he worked for Judge Marc H. Westbrook of the South Carolina Circuit Court, worked as an assistant solicitor and an assistant attorney general, and in 2009 joined the Columbia law firm Willoughby & Hoefer. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children.

Career

When Henry McMaster left the attorney general's office to run for governor in 2010, Wilson won the Republican runoff on June 22, 2010, with 60% over Leighton Lord and then defeated Democrat Matthew Richardson. He took office in 2011 as South Carolina's 51st attorney general.

He was reelected in 2014 over Democrat Parnell Diggs and in 2018, when he won a primary runoff against state Representative Todd Atwater with about 65% before defeating Democrat Constance Anastopoulo.

As attorney general he has litigated against same-sex marriage, the Affordable Care Act and environmental regulations, defended state abortion restrictions, and opposed mask and vaccine requirements.

2026 race

Wilson declared his candidacy for governor on June 23, 2025, for the seat held by term-limited Republican Henry McMaster. Running with state Senator Mike Reichenbach, in the June 9, 2026, Republican primary he placed second with 26.1% behind Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, and he won the June 23 runoff with 68.6% after President Donald Trump backed both candidates. His Democratic opponent in the November 3 election is state Representative Jermaine Johnson.
