Political landscape in South Carolina

Overview

South Carolina lies in the Southeast and Deep South, with North Carolina to the north, Georgia across the Savannah River to the west and south, and the Atlantic on its southeastern side. It is the 11th-smallest state and 23rd in population, with about 5.5 million residents in 2025 across 46 counties. Columbia is the capital and Charleston the largest city, while the Upstate, including Greenville and Spartanburg, forms the largest metro area. Named for King Charles I, the colony became the Province of South Carolina in 1712 and came under royal control in 1719. More than 200 Revolutionary War battles and skirmishes took place there, and on May 23, 1788, it ratified the Constitution as the eighth state. In 1860 it voted to secede before any other state, and it was readmitted in 1868. Aerospace, agribusiness, auto manufacturing and tourism lead its economy, and its terrain runs from the coastal plain through the Piedmont to the Blue Ridge.

Officeholders

As of October 2026, Governor Henry McMaster is a Republican, and the state's US senators are Tim Scott and Darline Graham, both Republicans.
