Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Born in Los Angeles, California, on July 4, 1985, Jermaine Lafrance Johnson Sr. grew up in a family that went through periods of homelessness and moved between motels after evictions.

His Amateur Athletic Union coach helped him enter prep schools through basketball; he attended seven high schools and graduated from the Winchendon School.

At the College of Charleston he captained the Cougars as a senior, became one of four players in the program's history to reach 1,100 points and 850 rebounds, and received his Bachelor of Arts in 2008.

He later earned a master's in management at Strayer University (2014) and a doctorate in business administration and organizational leadership at Northcentral University (2018).

Career

Chosen by the Reno Bighorns as a sixth-round pick in the NBA Development Draft and released after a year, Johnson played professionally for more than six years in Canada, France, Hungary and Mexico.

He founded the New Economic Beginnings Foundation to provide education and job placement for at-risk youth and veterans, and he chaired Andrew Yang's 2020 presidential campaign in South Carolina.

In June 2020 he defeated Democratic incumbent Jimmy Bales in a primary for a seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives, and after redistricting he won a 2022 primary against fellow representative Wendy Brawley by 115 votes.

In the House he sits on the Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee and serves as the House Minority Caucus secretary. On January 14, 2026, he announced that he would leave the House at the end of his term to concentrate on the governor's race.

2026 race

Johnson formed an exploratory committee on May 31, 2025, announced his candidacy for governor on October 28, 2025, and filed on March 23, 2026.

He won the Democratic primary on June 9, 2026, taking 59.7% against Billy Webster, a former chief of staff to Governor Richard Riley, and named Charleston businessman Sam Skardon as his running mate on July 30. Republican governor Henry McMaster is ineligible for a third consecutive term.

Johnson faces Republican attorney general Alan Wilson, who won a June 23 runoff against Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette with 68.6% of the vote, in the November 3 general election.
