Background
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was born on October 13, 1989, in the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City, to Sergio Ocasio-Roman, an architect born in the Bronx to a Puerto Rican family, and Blanca Ocasio-Cortez, who was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Arecibo.
When she was five, the family moved to a small house in suburban Yorktown Heights, and she graduated from Yorktown High School in 2007.
During college she interned in the Boston office of U.S. senator Ted Kennedy, and she graduated cum laude from Boston University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in international relations and economics.
After college she returned to the Bronx, where she worked as a bartender and waitress, launched the publishing venture Brook Avenue Press and served as an educational director for the National Hispanic Institute.

She went on to win the general election with 78% of the vote against Republican Anthony Pappas and took office in 2019 at age 29, becoming the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. A member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America, she was reelected in 2020, 2022 and 2024.
Her platform includes support for worker cooperatives, Medicare for All, tuition-free public colleges, a jobs guarantee, a Green New Deal and abolishing ICE.
