Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

John E. Deaton was born in Highland Park, Michigan, and was raised with his five siblings by a single mother in a household that depended partly on welfare and food stamps. He left high school, later went back to complete it, and became the first member of his family to earn a high school diploma.

Eastern Michigan University awarded him a B.A. magna cum laude in 1989, and he completed a J.D. at Boston's New England School of Law in 1995.

During law school he entered the United States Marine Corps, where he spent seven years working as both prosecutor and defense counsel in the Judge Advocate Division and taught at the Naval War College and the Naval Justice School; he was medically retired in 2002 after a non-combat injury.

Career

After the Marine Corps, Deaton worked for four years at a plaintiffs' firm handling mesothelioma cases, and in March 2006 he opened his own practice, the Deaton Law Firm, based in East Providence, Rhode Island, which represents plaintiffs in asbestos litigation.

He started buying cryptocurrency in 2017, and after the SEC filed suit against Ripple Labs in 2020 a federal court appointed him amicus curiae counsel for more than 75,000 XRP holders, work he did pro bono.

Deaton moved from Barrington, Rhode Island, to Massachusetts in January 2024, won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate that September as a centrist, and lost in November to Senator Elizabeth Warren, who took 59.9% of the vote to his 40.1%.

2026 race

Deaton declared a second Senate candidacy in November 2025, challenging Democratic incumbent Ed Markey, who is running for a third full term. The Massachusetts Republican Party and the Log Cabin Republicans endorsed him ahead of the primary.

In May 2026 he invited Markey and Representative Seth Moulton, the two leading Democratic candidates, to a three-way debate; Moulton took part in the June debate and Markey stayed away.

Deaton ran unopposed in the Republican primary on September 1, 2026, and faces Markey, who won the Democratic primary with 64.9% of the vote, in the November 3 general election.
