Background
Kevin Ray Hern was born on December 4, 1961, at an Air Force installation in western Missouri and was raised in Pope County, Arkansas, by his mother after his parents separated.
He completed Dover High School (1980) and Arkansas Tech University (1986), then worked at Rockwell International while enrolled in a doctoral program at the Georgia Institute of Technology in astronautical engineering, which he left after the 1986 Challenger disaster.
Hern joined McDonald's in Arkansas in 1987, rose to operations manager for several Little Rock area restaurants, bought his first franchise in North Little Rock in January 1997, and completed an MBA at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1999.
That year he moved to Oklahoma, where his holdings grew to 18 franchises around Tulsa; he sold the last of them in 2021. His other ventures include a community bank, a hog farm and high school sports publications. He is married to Tammy, and they have three children.
Career
When Jim Bridenstine left the House in 2018 to lead NASA, Hern ran for the open 1st district seat, beating Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris in the Republican runoff and Democrat Tim Gilpin in the general election.
Governor Mary Fallin appointed him to complete Bridenstine's term, and he took his seat on November 13, 2018. He won reelection in 2020, 2022 and 2024. Hern chaired the Republican Study Committee in the 118th Congress and sits on the Ways and Means Committee.
During the January 2023 speakership contest some Republicans nominated him as a protest alternative to Kevin McCarthy, and after McCarthy's removal that October, Hern briefly ran for Speaker himself.
2026 race
After Senator Markwayne Mullin left the Senate to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security, Alan Armstrong was appointed to the seat in March 2026 and is barred from seeking a full term.
Hern entered the race, received President Donald Trump's endorsement in March 2026, and won the June 16 Republican primary with 69.8%, defeating country singer Ty England. His Democratic opponent in the November 3 election is nurse N'Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, who won an August 25 runoff with 61.2%.
