Political landscape in Oklahoma

Overview

Oklahoma is a landlocked state spanning parts of the South, the South Central region and the Southwest. It borders Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, New Mexico and Colorado. The state is 20th in area and 28th in population, and Oklahoma City is both its capital and largest city; together with Tulsa it anchors metro areas that hold nearly two-thirds of residents. The name comes from Choctaw words meaning red people, and the Sooner nickname recalls settlers who claimed land ahead of the 1889 Land Rush. Most of its land falls within the Great Plains, the Cross Timbers or the Interior Highlands, all regions exposed to severe weather. It was a territory for American Indians relocated from east of the Mississippi, and 14.2 percent of residents identified as American Indian in the 2020 census, the highest share of any state. Oklahoma joined the Union on November 16, 1907, as the 46th state, and its economy rests on natural gas, oil, agriculture, aviation, energy, telecommunications and biotechnology.
