2026 race

Maurice Mercer, a former Pelham City Council President, is the Democratic nominee in the 2026 election for Alabama's 6th congressional district, which covers the central part of the state near Greater Birmingham.

The seat is held by Republican Gary Palmer, who was re-elected with 70.3% of the vote in 2024, and the legislature-approved redistricted map changed the district only by ceding half of Elmore County to the 2nd district.

Mercer won the special Democratic primary with 64.2% of the vote, ahead of substitute teacher Ashtyn Kennedy at 21.3%, nurse Keith Pilkington, who had been the nominee in the May primary, and community organizer Jacob Bouma-Sims.

In the November 3, 2026, general election Mercer faces Palmer, who won the special Republican primary with 87.0% of the vote.
