After graduating from Sylacauga High School in 1977, he attended Lake City Community College, now Florida Gateway College, for a time before moving back to Mobile to start his first business. Carl married his wife, Tina, in 1981, and the couple have two children. He is a Baptist.

Career

Jerry Carl spent his early working life in business, first at Alabama Power and Burford Equipment Company and then as a salesman for several companies in Mobile.

He established Stat Medical, a healthcare equipment business, in 1989, later worked as a manager at Rotech Medical, and went on to found a real estate development firm, the management group Carl and Associates in 2003, and the lumber and timber company Cricket and Butterfly, LLC.

He won a seat on the Mobile County Commission in 2012 after defeating incumbent Mike Dean in the Republican primary, was reelected in 2016, and was selected as commission president in 2019.

When Republican Bradley Byrne vacated the 1st district in 2020, Carl defeated former state senator Bill Hightower in a runoff for the Republican nomination and won the general election against Democrat James Averhart with 64.4% of the vote. He was reelected in 2022 over Libertarian Alexander Remrey.

In the 118th Congress he served on the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Natural Resources. After redistricting following Allen v. Milligan placed him in the same district as fellow incumbent Barry Moore, Carl lost the Republican primary of March 5, 2024, to Moore by 3.4%.
