Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Mike LiPetri was born on July 10, 1990. His grandfather, Angelo LiPetri, pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies during the 1950s. LiPetri graduated from Albany Law School in 2015 and went to work as an assistant corporation counsel for the New York City Law Department, representing the city and municipal officials. He also worked briefly as an associate attorney at Rivkin Radler before running for office.

Career

In 2018 LiPetri defeated incumbent assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino, 56% to 44%, to win the 9th Assembly district on the South Shore of Long Island, which includes Massapequa, Massapequa Park and South Farmingdale in Nassau County and West Babylon, Babylon village and West Islip in Suffolk County.

During his single term, from 2019 to 2021, he sponsored a bill to ban products containing 1,4-dioxane, a carcinogen found in Long Island tap water, which was signed into law, and he sat on the committees on Environmental Conservation, Housing, Racing and Wagering, Social Services, and Corporations, Authorities, and Commissions.

In 2020, after Representative Peter T. King announced his retirement, LiPetri ran for New York's 2nd congressional district and lost the Republican primary to Andrew Garbarino, 65% to 35%. Following redistricting line changes, the Nassau County Republican Party chose him as its candidate for the 3rd district in 2024; the June 25 primary was cancelled because he was the only candidate on the ballot, and he lost the general election to Democrat Tom Suozzi, 51.7% to 48.1%.

2026 race

LiPetri announced his candidacy for New York's 3rd congressional district in February 2026. The district covers the North Shore of Nassau County and the northeast Queens neighborhoods of Whitestone, Beechhurst, Little Neck and Douglaston.

In the Republican primary he received 81.9% of the vote, defeating attorney Greg Hach, who took 17.2%. LiPetri is also the Conservative Party candidate and, in a rematch of 2024, faces Democratic incumbent Tom Suozzi, who won his own primary with 79.3%, in the general election on November 3, 2026.
