Political landscape in Idaho

Overview

Idaho, a landlocked state, straddles two western subregions, the Pacific Northwest and the Mountain West. Its neighbors are Washington and Oregon on the west, Montana and Wyoming on the east, and Nevada and Utah on the south, while a short stretch of its northern boundary meets British Columbia. It ranks 14th by land area and 13th-least populous, with about two million residents. Boise is the capital and largest city. Once part of the disputed Oregon Country, the area passed through Oregon and Washington territories before Idaho Territory was organized in 1863; statehood followed on July 3, 1890, making Idaho the 43rd state. The Snake River Plain in the south holds most residents and farmland, and the US Forest Service manages roughly 38 percent of the land. Manufacturing, agriculture, mining, forestry, technology and tourism support the economy, and Idaho potatoes account for about a third of the national crop.

Officeholders

As of October 2026, Governor Brad Little and US Senators Mike Crapo and Jim Risch are all Republicans.

2026 elections

On November 3, 2026, Idaho will hold a US Senate race and the governor's race, elect members in both of its House districts, and vote on three ballot measures, including amendments on drug legalization authority and English as the official language and a reproductive rights proposition.
