Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Jim Jordan was born on February 17, 1964, in Troy, Ohio, the son of Shirley and John Jordan, and was raised in Champaign County. He wrestled for Graham High School, winning state championships in all four of his high school years before graduating in 1982.

At the University of Wisconsin-Madison he became a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion, winning titles in 1985 and 1986, and he graduated in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in economics.

Jordan later earned a master's degree in education from Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor from the Capital University Law School in 2001.

Career

Jordan worked as an assistant coach in Ohio State University's wrestling program from 1987 to 1995. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1994 and represented the 85th district for three terms, then won election to the Ohio Senate in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004.

When 26-year incumbent Mike Oxley retired in 2006, Jordan won the Republican primary for the 4th congressional district and defeated Democrat Rick Siferd with 60% of the vote, and he was re-elected in every election from 2008 to 2024.

In the House, Jordan chaired the Republican Study Committee during the 112th Congress and was one of the nine founders of the House Freedom Caucus, serving as its first chair from 2015 to 2017.

He was ranking member of the House Oversight Committee from 2019 to 2020 and then of the House Judiciary Committee, which he has chaired since 2023.

After Kevin McCarthy was removed as speaker in October 2023, Jordan won the Republican nomination for the post but fell short in three rounds of floor voting and was removed as speaker-designate by his Republican colleagues.
