Madeleine Dean was born on June 6, 1959, in Glenside, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, the youngest of the seven children of Bob and Mary Dean.
She graduated from Abington Senior High School and attended Montgomery County Community College before matriculating at La Salle University, where she was magna cum laude.
She later earned her Juris Doctor at the Widener University Delaware Law School and studied politics and public service at the Fels Institute of Government of the University of Pennsylvania.
After law school, Dean practiced law with the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers, later serving as its executive director, and then opened a three-woman law practice in Glenside. She also spent 10 years as an assistant professor of English at La Salle University, teaching writing and ethics.
After serving as an Abington Township commissioner, she won election to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2012 for the 153rd district, where she co-founded the PA SAFE Caucus with Dan Frankel and was elected chair of the Southeast Delegation of the Pennsylvania House Democrats in 2017.
In February 2018, after the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania mandated new congressional districts, Dean ended her campaign for lieutenant governor and ran for the 4th district instead. She defeated Republican money manager Dan David with 63.45% of the vote and was reelected in 2020 and 2022.
On January 12, 2021, she was named an impeachment manager for the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump. Her assignments include the House Appropriations Committee and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, where she is ranking member of the Foreign Arms Sales Task Force.
The 4th district, based in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, includes most of Montgomery County and parts of Berks County. Madeleine Dean, who was reelected with 59.1% of the vote in 2024, ran unopposed in the 2026 Democratic primary and received 88,286 votes. In the general election on November 3, 2026, she faces Republican Aurora Stuski, a gemologist who was also unopposed for the Republican nomination.
