Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
John Mannion was born and raised in Syracuse, New York, the grandson of Irish immigrants; his mother worked for New York Telephone and his father for the New York Central Railroad.
He attended Bishop Ludden High School, graduated from Binghamton University with a bachelor's degree in biology, and earned a Master of Science in secondary science education from SUNY Oswego.
He then became a high school biology teacher, working at Nottingham High School and Christian Brothers Academy before teaching in the West Genesee Central School District, where he served as president of the West Genesee Teachers' Association. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children.
Career
Mannion first ran for the New York State Senate in the 50th district in 2018, narrowly losing to Republican Bob Antonacci, and won the seat in 2020 with 52.57% of the vote against Republican Angi Renna, becoming the first Democrat to hold it in more than 50 years. His 2022 re-election was settled by a recount that gave him a 10-vote margin, the closest result in that year's state senate elections. In the senate he chaired the Committee on Disabilities.
In 2024 Mannion ran for New York's 22nd congressional district, defeating Sarah Klee Hood in the Democratic primary and then incumbent Republican Brandon Williams in the general election. In the 119th Congress he serves on the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Education and Workforce.

His Republican opponent is Kailee Buller, a former chief of staff of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, who holds the Conservative Party line as well. The general election takes place on November 3, 2026.
