Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Stephen Glenn Charles Hilton, born in London on August 25, 1969, is the son of parents who had left Hungary during the 1956 revolution and changed the family name from Hircsák to Hilton; his father, István, had played goaltender for Hungary's national ice hockey team.
His parents' marriage ended when he was five, and his father died two years later. A bursary took him to Christ's Hospital School in Horsham, Sussex, and he then read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford, as a student of New College.
His wife, Rachel Whetstone, is a communications executive whom he met at the Conservative Central Office.
Career
After graduating, Hilton worked at the Conservative Central Office, working with the party's advertising agency, Saatchi and Saatchi, and came to know David Cameron there. He was director of strategy to Prime Minister Cameron from 2010 to 2012 and moved to California in 2012.
He co-founded the crowdfunding company Crowdpac and led it as chief executive until May 2018, spent a year as a visiting fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution and held other Stanford posts, and wrote the 2015 book More Human.
From 2017 to 2023 he hosted the weekly Fox News program The Next Revolution, and he has stayed on at the network in a contributor role. In 2023 he started Golden Together, a California policy institute, together with Gloria Romero and Lanhee Chen.
He became a United States citizen in May 2021 and gave up British citizenship in 2025.
2026 race
Hilton entered the race for governor on April 21, 2025, Romero announced that she would be his running mate, and he received President Donald Trump's endorsement on April 6, 2026.
At the state Republican convention that spring he won 44% of delegate votes to 49% for Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, short of the threshold for an endorsement.
In the June 2, 2026, top-two primary he advanced from a field of 61 candidates to face Democrat Xavier Becerra in the November 3 election for the seat held by term-limited Democrat Gavin Newsom.
