Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Lucy McBath was born Lucia Kay Holman on June 1, 1960, in Joliet, Illinois. Her father, Lucien Holman, was a dentist who owned the African-American newspaper The Black Voice and served as president of the NAACP's Illinois chapter, and her mother, Wilma, worked as a nurse.

McBath graduated from Virginia State University with a bachelor's degree in political science in 1982 and then worked as an intern for former Virginia governor Douglas Wilder. In the 1990s she became a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines and relocated to Atlanta.

Career

McBath entered public life after her 17-year-old son, Jordan Davis, was shot and killed in Florida in 2012. She became a national spokeswoman for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, joined the advocacy group Mothers of the Movement, and spoke on behalf of Hillary Clinton at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

In 2018 McBath won the Democratic nomination for Georgia's 6th district in a July 24 runoff and defeated Republican incumbent Karen Handel, beating her again in 2020 with 54.6% of the vote.

After the 2021 redistricting session made the 6th district significantly more favorable to Republicans, she ran in the 7th district, defeated incumbent Carolyn Bourdeaux in the 2022 Democratic primary, and represented the 7th from 2023 to 2025 before returning to the 6th in 2025.

In the 119th Congress she sits on the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on the Judiciary, where she is ranking member of the Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance.
