Morelle received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1986.

In his early years he worked as a sales manager for a drycleaning and laundry business, and he began in politics as a constituent services representative and legislative aide for State Senator John D. Perry.

Career

Morelle first ran for the Monroe County legislature at age 24, won a seat there in 1983, and was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1990, representing the 136th district. In the Assembly he chaired the Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Sports Development from 2001, and Speaker Sheldon Silver appointed him majority leader in January 2013. He also chaired the Monroe County Democratic Committee from 2005 to 2014.

After the death of Representative Louise Slaughter, Morelle won the Democratic nomination for New York's 25th district on June 26, 2018, and on November 6 he won both the special and regular elections against Republican Jim Maxwell, taking office on November 13, 2018. He was re-elected in 2020, 2022, and 2024. He is ranking member of the Committee on House Administration and a member of the Committee on Appropriations.

2026 race

Joseph Morelle is the Democratic nominee for re-election in New York's 25th congressional district, which covers all of Monroe County and part of Ontario County in the Rochester area.

He faced two primary challengers in 2026, former Brighton town board member Robin Wilt, who ran to his left and had opposed him in 2018 and 2020, and pastor Sherita Traywick. Morelle won the Democratic primary with 63.3% of the vote to Wilt's 30.6% and Traywick's 6.0%.

In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Republican Virginia McIntyre, a Monroe County legislator, and also appears on the Working Families Party line.
