Political landscape in Utah

Overview

Utah is a landlocked Mountain West state and one of four states meeting at the Four Corners, alongside New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, with Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada along its other borders. With just over three million residents, it is 13th in area and 30th in population. Most development is concentrated along the Wasatch Front, home to the capital, Salt Lake City, and about two-thirds of residents, and in Washington County in the southwest. Puebloan, Navajo and Ute peoples lived in the region long before Spanish explorers arrived. Mormon settlers came via the Mormon Trail, and the United States annexed the area in 1848; disputes with Congress delayed statehood until Utah agreed to outlaw polygamy, and it became the 45th state on January 4, 1896. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its headquarters in Salt Lake City. The economy includes transportation, education, information technology, government, mining and tourism, and the 2020 census recorded the fastest growth of any state since 2010.

Officeholders

As of October 2026, Governor Spencer Cox and US Senators Mike Lee and John Curtis are all Republicans.

2026 elections

On November 3, 2026, Utah will elect members in all four US House districts and decide two ballot measures, one requiring a 60 percent vote for tax-raising initiatives and one on publishing constitutional amendments.
