Political landscape in Oregon

Overview

Oregon is a Pacific Northwest state in the western United States. The Columbia River traces much of its northern border with Washington, the Snake River much of its eastern border with Idaho, the 42nd parallel its southern border with California and Nevada, and the Pacific Ocean its western edge. With about 4.2 million people across more than 98,000 square miles, it ranks ninth in area and 27th in population. Salem is the capital and Portland the largest city. Indigenous nations lived in the region for millennia; the Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed it in the early 19th century, the Oregon Treaty of 1846 placed it under US sovereignty, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Its terrain ranges from volcanoes such as Mount Hood to dense forests and high desert, and Crater Lake National Park is its sole national park. Agriculture, fishing, logging and hydropower built the economy; Oregon leads the contiguous states in lumber output, technology grew through the Silicon Forest, and Nike, headquartered in Beaverton, is its largest public corporation.
