Adam Hamawy was born in Egypt and moved with his family to Old Bridge Township, New Jersey, as a baby, and he was raised there by Egyptian immigrant parents.
He attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick for his undergraduate studies and New Jersey Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
He completed his medical residency in general surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and a fellowship in plastic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. In 2018 he obtained an MBA from Rutgers University in Camden.
While completing his residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Adam Hamawy treated the wounded and first responders after the September 11 attacks.
He enlisted in the New Jersey National Guard and served eight years in the Medical Corps during the Iraq War, including nine months in Baghdad at the 31st Combat Support Hospital.
One of his patients there was future U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, who credits him with helping save her life after her helicopter was shot down in 2004.
He left the Army as a lieutenant colonel, having received a Meritorious Service Medal and three Army Commendation Medals, and he has since been a plastic surgeon in Princeton, New Jersey.
Hamawy has also volunteered as a physician after the siege of Sarajevo, the 2010 Haitian earthquake and the Syrian civil war.
In May 2024 he joined a volunteer medical mission at the Gaza European Hospital in Khan Younis, where he performed 120 surgeries, and the team was trapped after Israel seized and closed the Rafah border crossing.
He stayed until the team's members from Jordan, Egypt and Australia could also leave, and in June 2024 he described his experience at a congressional briefing.
Adam Hamawy is the Democratic nominee for New Jersey's 12th congressional district, a Central Jersey seat that takes in Trenton, Princeton University and Plainfield.
The seat is open because Democratic incumbent Bonnie Watson Coleman, who was re-elected with 61.2% of the vote in 2024, announced her retirement.
Hamawy won the June 2, 2026, Democratic primary against 12 other candidates, a field that included Plainfield mayor Adrian Mapp, East Brunswick mayor Brad Cohen, state assemblymember Verlina Reynolds-Jackson and former 7th district nominee Sue Altman.
In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Republican Gregg Mele and Green Party candidate Andres Jinete.
