Political landscape in New Jersey
Overview
New Jersey lies at the center of the urbanized Northeast corridor, bordered by New York State to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south, Pennsylvania across the Delaware River to the west, and Delaware across Delaware Bay to the southwest. It is fifth-smallest by land area and 11th in population, with more than 9.5 million residents in 2025, and it is the most densely settled state. Trenton is the capital and Newark the largest city. The Lenape lived here when Dutch and Swedish colonists arrived; the British later created the Province of New Jersey, which joined the American Revolution and hosted several of its battles. New Jersey ratified the Constitution on December 18, 1787, as the third state. It became a manufacturing center after the Civil War, and its economy now spans biopharmaceuticals, information technology, finance, logistics and tourism. Median household income in 2023 was the second-highest in the nation.
