Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

LaMonica McIver was born in Newark, New Jersey, on June 20, 1986, the oldest of four children, and grew up in the city's Central Ward.

She graduated from Central High School in 2004 and, as the first in her family to attend college, earned a degree in English literature from Bloomfield College and a master's degree in educational leadership and policy from Seton Hall University.

Before entering politics she worked as a personnel director for Montclair Public Schools and as public affairs manager for Newark's Public Service Enterprise Group, and she co-founded Newark G.A.L.S., a non-profit that fosters leadership in young women and girls.

Career

LaMonica McIver's interest in politics began when she handed out flyers for the city council campaign of Ras Baraka, who had been her fifth grade teacher. She was elected to the Municipal Council of Newark in 2018 and became its president in 2022.

After Representative Donald Payne Jr. died in April 2024, she entered the special election for the 10th district, won the Democratic primary in July and the general election in September, and was sworn in on September 23, 2024. She won her first full term on November 5, 2024.

On May 9, 2025, McIver took part in a congressional oversight visit to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Newark.

She was later charged with assaulting, impeding and interfering with law enforcement in connection with the visit, was indicted in June 2025, pleaded not guilty, and has called the charges political. On August 27, 2026, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit denied her motions to dismiss.

She is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

2026 race

LaMonica McIver is seeking re-election in New Jersey's 10th congressional district, which is centered on Newark and takes in neighboring Irvington and Orange, and which she won with 74.4% of the vote in 2024.

In the 2026 Democratic primary she defeated Lawrence Poster, a managing director at Catalyx Group, with 84.8% of the vote.

She faces Republican Carmen Bucco, a perennial candidate who was the party's nominee for the district in the 2024 special and regular elections, in the general election on November 3, 2026.
