Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Grace Meng was born on October 1, 1975, in Queens, New York, to a Taiwanese American family, and was raised in the Bayside and Flushing sections of the borough. She is the daughter of Shiao-Mei Meng and Jimmy Meng, who in 2004 became the first Asian American elected to the New York State Assembly.

Meng attended Stuyvesant High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan, and received a Juris Doctor from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University. She married Wayne Kye, a dentist, in June 2005, and the couple live in Queens with their two sons.

Career

Meng first sought her father's Assembly seat in 2006 but was removed from the ballot after a residency challenge by Ellen Young. She ran again in 2008, defeating Young 59% to 41% in the September 9 Democratic primary and 87% to 13% in the general election, and represented the 22nd Assembly district from 2009 until 2012. Her Reverse Mortgage Act of 2009 kept reverse mortgage proceeds from counting as income for seniors' property tax exemptions.

In 2012 Meng won the Democratic primary for New York's 6th congressional district over Rory Lancman and Elizabeth Crowley, and on November 6 she defeated Republican Dan Halloran, becoming the first Asian American elected to Congress from New York.

She took office on January 3, 2013, and became a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee in February 2017. In the 119th Congress she sits on the Committee on Appropriations, where she is ranking member of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies.

2026 race

The 6th district covers Central and Eastern Queens, including Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Kew Gardens, Flushing, Bayside and Fresh Meadows.

Meng, who was re-elected with 60.7% of the vote in 2024, faced a primary challenge from Chuck Park, a former chief of staff to New York City councilmember Shekar Krishnan, who criticized her acceptance of AIPAC donations and her support for the Metropolitan Park casino project.

Meng won with 56.8% to Park's 42.9%. She faces Republican Joseph Chou, who also holds the Conservative Party line, in the general election on November 3, 2026.
