Career

Underwood worked in health policy before seeking office. In 2018 she won the March 20 Democratic primary with 57% of the vote and defeated Republican incumbent Randy Hultgren with 52.5% in November, becoming the youngest Black woman to serve in Congress.

She was re-elected in 2020 over Jim Oberweis, in 2022 with 54% after redistricting, and in 2024 with 55% against Republican Jim Marter.

Underwood has co-chaired the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee since December 2022, and in April 2019 she founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus with Representative Alma Adams. On the Appropriations Committee she is ranking member of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security.
