In 2026 he ran in the special election for California's 1st congressional district, which became vacant after the death of Doug LaMalfa, and defeated Democrats Audrey Denney and Mike McGuire by a large margin.
He was sworn into the U.S. House on June 10, 2026, and sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
2026 race
James Gallagher is the Republican incumbent in California's 1st congressional district, having won the special election held on June 2, 2026, under the boundaries in place before Proposition 50, to finish the term of Doug LaMalfa, who had been re-elected with 65.3% of the vote in 2024.
