Political landscape in Missouri

Overview

Missouri, a landlocked Midwestern state, borders Iowa on the north; Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois on the east; Arkansas on the south; and Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma on the west. It ranks 21st in land area and, with more than six million residents, 18th in population. Jefferson City is the capital, Kansas City is the largest city, and Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia and Springfield are the main urban areas. French settlers established Ste. Genevieve (1735) and St. Louis (1764), and the United States acquired the area in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Missouri entered the Union in 1821 as a slave state under the Missouri Compromise and played a central part in westward expansion; as a border state during the Civil War it endured rival governments and guerrilla fighting. St. Louis blues, Kansas City jazz and ragtime all originated in Missouri, and the state is a major brewing center, home to Anheuser-Busch, along with companies such as Edward Jones, H&R Block and O'Reilly Auto Parts.
