Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Dina Titus, whose full name is Alice Constandina Titus, was born on May 23, 1950, in Thomasville, Georgia.

She graduated from the College of William & Mary with a bachelor's degree in political science, earned a master's degree from the University of Georgia, and received a Ph.D. from Florida State University.

She taught in the political science department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), retiring in 2011. Titus has been married since 1979 to Thomas C. Wright, a retired UNLV professor of history, and she is Greek Orthodox.

Career

Titus was first elected to the Nevada Senate in 1988 and represented the 7th district for 20 years. In 2006 she won the Democratic nomination for governor of Nevada and lost to Republican congressman Jim Gibbons.

Two years later Democrats recruited her to run in the 3rd congressional district, where she defeated Republican incumbent Jon Porter, 47% to 42%, becoming the first Democrat to represent the district. She lost the seat in 2010 to Republican Joe Heck by less than 2,000 votes.

After redistricting placed her home in the 1st district, Titus entered the 2012 race there when Democratic incumbent Shelley Berkley ran for the U.S. Senate, and she defeated Republican Chris Edwards in the general election.

She has been reelected in each election since, defeating Republican Mark Robertson in 2022 and again in a 2024 rematch with 52.0% of the vote.

For the 119th Congress she serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, where she is ranking member of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials, and she chairs the Americans Abroad Caucus.

2026 race

Dina Titus is seeking reelection in Nevada's 1st congressional district, which extends from inner Las Vegas toward its southeastern suburbs and rural parts of Clark County, including Paradise, Henderson and Boulder City.

In the 2026 Democratic primary she received 75.9% of the vote, defeating businesswoman and nonprofit founder Joy Hoover, perennial candidate Gabriel Cornejo and Luis Paniagua.

In the general election on November 3, 2026, Titus faces Republican Carrie Buck, who has represented the 5th district in the Nevada Senate since 2020.
