Political landscape in Nevada

Overview

Nevada is a landlocked Western state bordered by Idaho, Oregon, California, Arizona and Utah. It is seventh in area and 31st in population, and close to three-quarters of residents live in Clark County, home of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Carson City is the capital and Las Vegas the largest city. Spanish explorers named the region for its snow-capped mountains, and the United States acquired it from Mexico in 1848. The 1859 Comstock Lode silver strike fueled growth, leading to Nevada Territory in 1861 and statehood on October 31, 1864; Nevada was the 36th state and was admitted during the Civil War. Legal gambling and permissive marriage and divorce laws made Nevada a major tourist destination during the 20th century. Tourism is the largest employer and mining remains significant, with Nevada ranking as the world's fourth-largest gold producer. Most of the state is desert or semi-arid, and it is the driest state in the country.

Officeholders

As of October 2026, Nevada's governor is Joe Lombardo, a Republican, while its US senators, Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, are both Democrats.
