Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Adam Gray was born on September 23, 1977, in Merced, California, and grew up working in his family's dairy supply and feed store. He attended Golden Valley High School in Merced, graduating with the school's first class, and went on to Merced College.
Gray then earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, while interning for Gary Condit. He was previously married to Cadee Condit, Gary Condit's daughter, and the couple have one child.
Career
After college, Gray worked in the district office of state assemblymember Dennis Cardoza and later on the staffs of assemblymembers Herb Wesson, Fabian Núñez and Jerome Horton and of state senator Ron Calderon.
He won election to the California State Assembly in November 2012 with 58.2% of the vote and represented the 21st district from 2012 to 2022.
In the Assembly he founded the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and chaired the Governmental Organization Committee until the assembly leader removed him from that post over his opposition to proposed limits on water flows.
Gray first ran for California's 13th congressional district in 2022 and lost to Republican John Duarte by 564 votes. In a 2024 rematch he took the lead over Duarte on November 26, and his victory was the last congressional race of that election to be called. Gray took office on January 3, 2025, joined the House Committees on Agriculture and Natural Resources, and was named whip of the Blue Dog Coalition.
