Political landscape in Wisconsin

Overview

Wisconsin, a Great Lakes state of the Upper Midwest, borders Minnesota on the west, Iowa on the southwest, Illinois on the south and Michigan on the northeast, with Lake Michigan on its east and Lake Superior on its north. With about 6 million residents and roughly 65,500 square miles, it ranks 21st in population and 23rd in area, and it has 72 counties. Milwaukee is the largest city, Madison is the capital and second-largest city, and the Fox Cities and Green Bay are other urban centers. Once within the Northwest Territory, Wisconsin became a state in 1848, and many settlers in the 1800s and early 1900s came from Germany and Scandinavia, whose influence persists in local food. Known as America's Dairyland, the state is one of the nation's leading dairy producers and is known for its cheese, and its economy centers on healthcare, information technology, manufacturing and a farm sector that includes cranberries and ginseng, along with tourism and brewing. Wisconsin is the founding place of the Republican Party (1854) and has been viewed as a swing state since 2016.
