Addison McDowell was born Addison Parker McDowell on January 21, 1994, and was raised in Lexington, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2016. That same year his younger brother, Luke, died from an accidental fentanyl overdose. McDowell has two children.
Addison McDowell worked for a U.S. House election campaign for Richard Hudson and in constituent services for Representative Ted Budd before serving as a lobbyist for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.
He ran for the 6th congressional district in 2024, attributing his decision to run to his brother's death.
McDowell finished first in the Republican primary with 26% of the vote, short of the 30% required to avoid a runoff, and second-place finisher Mark Walker, who took 24%, then opted to join the Donald Trump 2024 presidential campaign and forgo a runoff, which made McDowell the nominee.
He won the November 2024 election and took office in 2025. In the 119th Congress he serves on the Committee on the Budget, the Committee on Natural Resources, and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
The 6th district includes all of Davidson, Davie, and Rowan counties and portions of northwestern Cabarrus, eastern Forsyth, and southwestern Guilford counties. Addison McDowell, the Republican incumbent, was elected there in 2024 with 69.2% of the vote and is his party's nominee for 2026.
In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Democrat Cyril Jefferson, the mayor of High Point, who won a four-candidate Democratic primary with 39.2% of the vote ahead of federal employee Alysa Kassay, former Brooksville, Oklahoma, mayor Keith Davenport, and bartender Beau Blair.
