Ken Calvert was born on June 8, 1953, in Corona, California, to Marceline Hamblen and Ira D. Calvert Jr., and he still lives in the city. As a young man, he joined the congressional campaign of former state Assemblyman Victor Veysey in 1970.
Calvert graduated from Corona High School in 1971 and later worked as an intern in Veysey's Washington, D.C., office after Veysey was re-elected in 1972.
He received an Associate of Arts degree in business from Chaffey Community College in 1973 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University in 1975, after which he became a small business owner in the restaurant and real estate industries.
Ken Calvert chaired the Riverside County Republican Party from 1984 to 1988. His first bid for the U.S. House came in 1982, when, at 29, he narrowly lost the Republican primary for a newly drawn district to Riverside County Supervisor Al McCandless.
He won a new district in 1992 with 47% of the vote, defeating Democrat Mark Takano by 519 votes, and was reelected over the following decades in districts numbered the 43rd, 44th and 42nd.
Due to redistricting he sought reelection in the 41st district in 2022, defeating Democrat Will Rollins, and he won a seventeenth term in a 2024 rematch with Rollins.
In the House, Calvert is the original author of the E-Verify law, which began with H.R. 502, a bill he introduced in 1995. In the 109th Congress he chaired the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee and introduced and passed into law the NASA Authorization Act of 2005. For the 118th Congress he served on the Committee on Appropriations, where he chaired the Subcommittee on Defense. He is a member of the Republican Main Street Partnership.
Redistricting for 2026 drew two Republican incumbents, Ken Calvert and Young Kim, into California's 40th congressional district.
Calvert, who was re-elected with 51.7% of the vote in the 41st district in 2024, finished first in the top-two primary with 34.89% of the vote, while Kim placed second with 20.63%.
The two Republicans advanced ahead of a field of Democrats that included Esther Kim Varet, director of Various Small Fires, who took 16.60%, and immigration attorney Lisa Ramirez, who took 14.03%.
Calvert and Kim, an incumbent U.S. representative re-elected with 55.3% in 2024, face each other in the general election on November 3, 2026.
