Larry Thompson was born on August 1, 1944, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to Angelo and Anne (Tuminello) Thompson. He graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Juris Doctor in 1968. Thompson began his entertainment-industry career as in-house counsel for Capitol Records, where he was the youngest lawyer working for the label and negotiated separate contracts for each of the Beatles when the group broke up.
By the 1970s Thompson was a founding partner in the entertainment law firm Thompson, Shankman, Bond and Moss, and after that partnership dissolved he created the Larry A. Thompson Organization, a company devoted to film production and the personal management of talent.
With fellow lawyers Harry E. Sloan and Larry Kuppin he bought New World Pictures from Roger Corman for $16.5 million and took the company public, selling his equity position in 1983.
His company has managed over 200 artists, among them Drew Barrymore, Jason Bateman, Cindy Crawford, William Shatner and Joan Rivers.
Thompson's television productions include Little Girl Lost: The Delimar Vera Story (2008), Amish Grace (2010) and Liz & Dick (2012), and in 2012 he produced William Shatner's one-man Broadway show, Shatner's World: We Just Live in It.
He has also developed books with Joan Rivers and wrote Shine (2004) and Voting In The Age Of Chaos (2024).
In politics, Thompson ran for Congress in California's 37th congressional district as an independent in 2020, and in 2024 he was the Republican candidate in the 32nd district, losing the general election to Democrat Brad Sherman, who won 66.2% of the vote.
Larry Thompson is again the Republican candidate in California's 32nd congressional district, where Democrat Brad Sherman is the incumbent.
In the top-two primary Thompson finished second with 32.72% of the vote, behind Sherman's 36.77% and ahead of Democrat Jake Levine, a former senior director for Climate & Energy at the National Security Council, who received 15.18%.
As a result Thompson faces Sherman, the incumbent U.S. representative, in the general election on November 3, 2026.
