Political landscape in Illinois
Overview
Illinois is a Midwestern state bounded by the Wabash and Ohio rivers on the south, Lake Michigan on the northeast and the Mississippi River along most of its western side. Among the 50 states it has the sixth-largest population, the fifth-largest economy by GDP and the 25th-largest land area. Springfield, in central Illinois, is the capital, and Chicago in the northeast is the largest city; about two-thirds of residents live in the Chicago metropolitan area. French settlers arrived in the 17th century, the region later formed part of the Northwest Territory, and Illinois became a state in 1818. Canals and railroads made it a national transportation hub in the 19th century, and it grew into one of the most industrialized states, and its prairie became highly productive farmland. Its diversified economy today combines Chicago's global business role with manufacturing and farming across the northern and central regions and coal, timber and oil in the south. Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant were each elected president while living in Illinois.
